Another wasted opportunity in Australia
The Standards for Solaria for Cosmetic Purpose 2009 where released on the 31.01.2009.
The Australasian Solarium Association, together with a vast array of other stakeholders has worked hard for over one year on the committee to create this living document.
A Standard is defined as accepted, normal regulation. It should be the accepted basis in the relationship between Customer, Operator and the Law.
States Legislation has missed this opportunity.
These are fines for operators in Australia:
Victoria
$ 660,720.00
South Australia
$ 50,000.00
WA (under review)
?
QLD
Nil
NSW (under review)
either $ 500.00 or $ 1,000.00, as well as a new consent form for every visit
TAS (under review)
$ 6,000.00
One Standard - 6 different fines and regulations?
My Opinion
Spot the difference...
Tobacco
19,000 deaths p.a. are reportedly attributed to tobacco use.
The fines for the sale of cigarettes to minors are $ 8,000.00
Cigarettes are freely available, and a great revenue raiser for Governments. Consent Forms for are not demanded.
Alcohol
During 1997, 3,290 Australians died from injury and disease caused by high-risk drinking.
The fines for sale of alcohol to minors via the internet is $ 2,200.00
Alcohol is freely available in Australia, and a great revenue raiser for Governments.
Consent Forms for are not demanded.
Cars
The National toll of road fatalities over the 20007 Christmas period was 27, over only 4 days!
There are no fines for the use of cars.
Consent Forms for are not demanded.
Bicycles
11 bicyclists under the age of 14 died in 1993.
Bicycles are actively promoted as an alternative mode of transport
There are no fines for underage bicycling, and no calls to ban them.
Consent Forms for are not demanded.
Solarium
1,100 Melanoma deaths p.a. are reportedly attributed to UV-exposure.
There are no fines for recreational outdoor tanning. Minors, and persons with a Skin type I are allowed unsupervised at Australian Beaches and do not need consent forms.
The latest Gordon Report from the Queensland Institute of Medicine comes to the conclusion that between 2 to 4 deaths [0,1% of all deaths from Melanoma] could be attributed to Solarium use.
This is cause to call Solarium use a public danger, and fines for Solarium Operators not complying with the Victorian Legislation will be $ 660,720.00.
NSW demands a Consent Form for every visit to a Solarium.
To my knowledge the highest fines. as well as the strictest Solarium regulations World-Wide.
Can someone please bring these figures into perspective?
