GUIDE LINES for SOLARIUM OPERATORS

The solaria issue came to the attention of the NSW Minister of Health in June 2003, through a Parliamentary question. Concerns were raised over the lack of compliance with safety standards, and the easy access to solariums by minors under 18 years of age. Of major concern was the lack of evidence to show compliance by the solarium industry to the Standards Australia guidelines Solaria for cosmetic purposes AS/NZS 2635:2002.

The Australian Standards governing the solarium industry were released, and published in May 2002. These Standards are the basis under which solarium operators have to operate in Australia.

In response to the Minister's concerns, a cross industry initiative ‑ involving the Advanced Association of Beauty Therapists, Australasian Solarium Association, Fitness NSW and the Professional Hairdressers Association ‑ has addressed these issues and formulated guidelines for solarium operators.

In order to make every solarium operator aware of their obligations to adhere to the Standards, the industry associations provide these guidelines free of charge.

The guidelines provide operators with a summary of responsibilities and aim to:
>   raise the health and safety standards within the industry and with clients
>   allow greater returns on business investment through improved client satisfaction.

It is intended that the combined industry associations Guidelines for Solarium Operators will raise the general standards, awareness and compliance of the solarium industry. The guidelines aim to ensure that the needs and rights of solarium clients and operators alike are now protected.

Please use the enclosed documents as your “master copies”, and photocopy them according to your needs. Should you require extra copies, download them from our web site: www.solariumassociation.info or call us.

  • It is very important that you read and understand these guidelines. You must operate your solarium business accordingly!
  • If this “Education is better than Legislation” campaign fails, the solarium industry in Australia will suffer consequences.

The Australasian Solarium Association is here to help.
If you are unsure about your obligations, call or email us, or go to our web-site for further information.

 With best regards
