My Opinion

Spot the difference...

  • 19,000 deaths p.a. are reportedly attributed to tobacco use.
  • The fines for the sale of cigarettes to minors are $ 8,000.00
  • Cigarettes are freely available, and a great revenue raiser for Governments
  • During 1997,  3,290 Australians died from injury and disease caused by high-risk drinking.

  • The fines for sale of alcohol to minors via the internet is $ 2,200.00

  • Alcohol is freely available in Australia, and a great revenue raiser for Governments.

  • The National toll of road fatalities over the 20007 Christmas period was 27, over only 4 days!
  • There are no fines for the use of cars.
  • 11 bicyclists under the age of 14 died in 1993.
  • Bicycles are actively promoted as an alternative mode of transport
  • There are no fines for underage bicycling, and no calls to ban them

  • 1,100 Melanoma deaths p.a. are reportedly attributed to UV-exposure.
  • There are no fines for recreational outdoor tanning. Minors, and persons with a Skin type I  are allowed unsupervised at Australian Beaches.
  • The latest Gordon Report from the Queensland Institute of Medicine [if you want to trust this report] comes to the conclusion that between 2 to 4 deaths [0,1% of all deaths from Melanoma] can be attributed to Solarium use.

  • This is cause to call Solarium use a public danger, and fines for Solarium Operators not complying with the Victorian Legislation will be                 $ 660,720.00.

To my knowledge the highest fines worldwide.

Can someone please bring these figures into perspective?
